Cet essai s'inscrit en rupture avec la conception convenue de l'Autochtone chassé de son territoire ancestral par l'Européen et par la civilisation. Il suggère plutôt que la présence autochtone sur le territoire du Québec, à l'exception notable des Mohawks dans le sud, serait à la fois liée et tributaire de l'occupation graduelle du territoire et de son développement par les Canadiens français et les Anglais, et ce, à peu d'exceptions près.
